Dempsey drafted in from Norwegian leagues to help Solskjaer at Man Utd

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been reunited with coach Mark Dempsey in his efforts to transform Manchester United's fortunes.

Dempsey, who played for United during the 1980s, worked alongside Solskjaer during his first spell in charge of Norwegian club Molde and was also part of his backroom team at Cardiff City.

After his own crack at management in Norway and Sweden, Dempsey, 54, is now back at the club where he started his career.

He was pictured in conference with interim manager Solskjaer and coach Mike Phelan on the training ground as United prepare for Sunday's home Premier League fixture against Bournemouth.

Dempsey, a midfielder, came through the academy ranks at Old Trafford in the early 1980s, signing his first professional contract with united in January 1982.

However, first-team opportunities proved few and far between for the local lad, who played against Spartak Varna in the European Cup Winners' Cup in November 1983 and against Ipswich Town in the First Division in December 1985.

He left United after six years in 1986, joining Sheffield United before going on to play for Rotherham United and Macclesfield Town.

Dempsey entered coaching and worked alongside Solskjaer in United's academy when the Norwegian was reserve team coach between 2008 and 2010.

When Solskjaer was appointed manager of Norwegian club Molde in November 2010, he took Dempsey with him and there they won two league titles.

Dempsey also worked with the former striker during his ill-fated spell with Premier League Cardiff City in 2014.

It's clear the pair have good chemistry, with Solskjaer saying of Dempsey: 'If I'm half-way through a sentence he will very often finish it for me and vice-versa.

'We know exactly where each other are coming from.'

After that he branched out on his own into management, with spells at Norwegians Haugesund, Swedish top-flight side Djurgarden, a second stint as assistant at Molde, a short spell at Start and a post at second tier club Kongsvinger.

In November, Dempsey left Kongsvinger for health reasons after being laid low by a virus and returned to England with his family. He had been contracted until 2020.

The local newspaper Glamdalen wrote that Dempsey was left completely or partly bedridden following a loss to Aalesund in September.

'There have been some very tough days. After many medical checks, it turned out that I have some virus and that virus has made me struggle and I have been very dizzy at times,' he told the newspaper.

Now Dempsey is part of the team trying to resurrect United's season following a disastrous opening to the campaign under sacked boss Jose Mourinho.

United are eight points off the top four despite Solskjaer winning his first two matches in charge - 5-1 at Cardiff City and 3-1 at home to Huddersfield Town.
