EA Sports pull Van Basten from FIFA 20 after 'Sieg Heil' shame

EA Sports have pulled Marco van Basten from all their FIFA 20 platforms after the Dutch legend was caught saying 'Sieg Heil' on live television.

Van Basten, 55, was working as an analyst for Fox Sports two weekends ago when he was caught on mic saying the German phrase for 'hail victory' that became notorious for its use at Nazi rallies.

He was suspended for a week by the television network after the comment, and EA Sports have now moved to pull him from the game.

In a direct message sent to members of the 'FIFA Community', EA Sports said: 'We are aware of recent comments made by Marco van Basten.

'We have an expectation that our commitment to equality and diversity is upheld across our game. As such, we will suspend Marco van Basten ICON items from being available in Packs, SBCs and FUT Draft until further notice.'

Although Van Basten is long retired, some legendary players are still available to play with on the game, including the likes of Zinedine Zidane, Didier Drogba and Ronald Koeman.

It is understood that if you already own Van Basten's ICON card in Ultimate Team, you will currently still be able to play with him in your team.

Van Basten's comments on Fox Sports came to ridicule TV presenter Hans Kraay's German in an interview with Heracles' German manager Frank Wormuth, and he apologised later in the show.

In his initial comment, he was off-screen but with his mic still on, and he said: 'Not too pretty, sieg heil, pfannkuchen (pancake).'

Fox Sports said in a statement last week that it distanced itself from the comment, which the broadcaster called 'stupid and inappropriate.'

Van Basten also apologised himself, stating: 'It was not my intention at all to shock people. I only wanted to "explain" Hans' German.'
