Kylian Mbappe's penalty was enough for France to beat Greece 1-0 in a fraught Euro 2024 qualifier in Paris.

Match Report

Mbappe netted a second-half penalty to become the best French scorer over a season with 54 goals for club and country, beating the mark set by Just Fontaine in 1957-58.

It also helped the Paris St Germain forward to level with Norway and Manchester City striker Erling Haaland, who will have the opportunity to finish top scorer among those playing in the five top European leagues when his national team take on Cyprus on Tuesday.

The result left France top of Group B with 12 points, six ahead of second-placed Greece, who had Konstantinos Mavropanos sent off in the second half, after Mbappe's goal.

The defender was shown two yellow cards, the second of which he protested along with the majority of his team-mates, but he will now face a suspension.

France will be looking to go all the way in Euro 2024 after falling short in 2021, losing on penalties to Switzerland in the round of 16 stage.

Mbappe missed from the spot that day but have improved from the spot since, now taker for both club and country.

Having won the 2018 World Cup, Didier Deschamps' side were expected to go on and lift more major titles but managed just a Nations League win since.

They lost in the World Cup final in 2022, in which Mbappe scored a hat-trick, and the forward will be keen to kick on in next summer's Euros, which his side now seem certain to qualify for.
