Gary Neville slams Manchester United's squad and recruitment

Gary Neville has criticised Manchester United's recruitment amid the Red Devils' 1-0 away loss at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday.

The former England star has revealed his thoughts that only one player from Old Trafford would get in the Spurs' best team.

It comes after Ruben Amorim's side have endured their 12th Premier League defeat this season, ultimately dropping to 15th place with only 29 points.

United have included both of their strikers who have been criticised for lack of goals in the team - Joshua Zirkzee and Rasmus Hojlund - but still saw Spurs' midfielder James Maddison score the only goal of the game in the 19th minute.

With several injured midfielders in the squad, such as Kobbie Mainoo, Manuel Ugarte and Christian Eriksen, the Portuguese was forced to drop team captain Bruno Fernandes in an unusual deep position, alongside former Real Madrid star Casemiro, who saw his first start since December.

However, it was Fernandes who Neville highlighted as the only player to fit in Tottenham's best XI during his post-match analysis for Sky Sports.

He said: 'How many United players would get into that spurs team if everybody was fit? I think Bruno. Maybe Amad but I’d probably take Kulusevski.

'Every Tottenham player baring one is better than every single Man United player. That’s not being emotional, we’ve gone past that now, it’s just really sad. That’s where Man United are at.

'It’s what happens to players when they get here. We’ve seen players go the other way and thrive.'

The disappointing defeat at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium marked Amorim's ninth since his arrival at Old Trafford, alongside 10 victories and two draws across all competitions.

His team went into Sunday's clash missing several key players and calling up seven teenagers from the academy.

However, they made only one substitution in the extra-time of the second half, when 17-year-old Chido Obi debuted for the senior team, replacing Casemiro, who was booked earlier.

Fellow presenter Jamie Redknapp added: 'They need 7/8 players to change. We all thought that Ten Hag didn’t have a clue and I’m sure this manager probably thought that.

'They need to bring in better players. That isn’t the nucleus of a squad that’s going to be competing. When you look at Arsenal City, Liverpool… They are miles ahead.

'They’ve spent fortunes. But if your recruitment is wrong and you’re bringing in 30-year-old’s on four of five year contracts it’s never going to work.

'They have to change now. I looked at the subs today and I actually felt sorry for him. He didn’t have the personnel to get the result he wanted.’

Some of United's players, including Luke Shaw, Mason Mount, and Jonny Evans, continue to work toward a return, while Lisandro Martinez is set to miss the rest of the season due to an ACL injury.

The Red Devils are scheduled to face Everton at Goodison Park in their next Premier League game on Saturday.
