Gavi has been crowned the best under-21 player on the planet at Monday evening's Ballon D'Or awards.

The Barcelona midfielder was awarded the Kopa trophy at the annual ceremony in Paris as he was handed the award by team-mate and last year's winner, Pedri.

Speaking upon receiving the award, Gavi said he tries to apply himself in the best way possible every time he steps onto the pitch and hopes to continue his remarkable ascent into one of Spain's foremost young stars.

He said: 'I try and give the best of myself the whole time and try to apply myself in the best way.

The young midfielder was handed the award in physical form as well as an NFT (non-fungible token) version of the prize by former Chelsea striker Didier Drogba.

Gavi, since breaking into Xavi Hernandez's team, has established a solid midfield partnership alongside Pedri as Barcelona look to rebuild their side - and club - around the two youngsters.

Clearly proud to have handed the award over to his friend and team-mate, Pedri said upon returning to the ceremony where he so gloriously claimed the award last year: 'It is a very proud thing to see [Gavi win].

'We spend a lot of time together and I hope we are playing together for many years to come.'

Gavi is saw off the likes of Bukayo Saka, Jude Bellingham, Nuno Mendes, Jamal Musiala and Eduardo Camavinga to claim the award.

The award follows a difficult week for Gavi and Barcelona in which they were all but knocked out of the Champions League at the group stage as well as losing ground on Real Madrid in the hunt for the La Liga crown.

Wednesday's 3-3 draw with Inter Milan descended into something of a basketball match with Gavi himself not performing to the levels expected of him.

Meanwhile, Sunday's loss at the Bernabeu at the hands of Real Madrid saw Barcelona lose their grip on the top of the league to fall three points behind last season's champions.

Meanwhile, the other awards handed out at the typically glamorous ceremony saw Thibaut Courtois awarded the prize for the best goalkeeper, Robert Lewandowski the Gerd Muller prize for the best striker and Beth Mead finish second in the voting for the women's Ballon D'Or behind Alexia Putellas.
