Gerrard names Zidane & Maradona among 6 players who made him love football

As one of the greatest midfielders in English football history, Steven Gerrard's influence across the game is profound.

But just who are the players whose own performances made the legendary former Liverpool captain fall in love with the sport?

That was the question posed by ex-Reds skipper Jamie Redknapp on Instagram on Tuesday as the former midfielder took the plunge on the latest social media trend.

Redknapp, who played over 300 times for the Reds across an 11-year Anfield career, picked six players who made him 'fall in love' with football after being nominated himself earlier this week.

The former England man named Kenny Dalglish, Paul Gascoigne and John Barnes among his half dozen before nominating the iconic Gerrard for his own version.

The current Rangers boss picked an eclectic mix of supreme goalscorers, midfield geniuses and a wing wizard in John Barnes.

Perhaps largely due to their contributions at the 1990 World Cup in Italy, Gerrard named former England stars Gary Lineker and Paul Gascogine as two of his six.

Both former Three Lions stars were instrumental in helping Bobby Robson's side to the World Cup semi-final nearly 30 years ago with Lineker finishing third in the scoring charts that summer with four.

Two of the greatest of all time in the shape of Diego Maradona and Zinedine Zidane are named as Liverpool legends John Barnes and Ian Rush complete the set.

Rush and Barnes were arguably the biggest stars of the last Liverpool team to win the league title in 1990 and the pair are revered in Anfield history as two of the greatest players to have turned out for the Reds.

“Ian Rush was a big hero of mine," Gerrard said in 2012. "I looked up to him for a long time and used to watch a lot of the videos of him scoring."

The Rangers boss went on to nominate former team-mates Luis Garcia, Neil Mellor and Robbie Keane alongside Rush and former Arsenal great Ian Wright.
