National Television Awards 2019 viewers were incredulous when Hollywood legend Danny DeVito popped up onstage to present an award.

But the 74-year-old actor was left disappointed after his football joke didn't land with the crowd, quipping that the audience were 'not nice'.

The lovable actor - who presented the award for best drama performance to Richard Madden - then proceeded to miss out some of the names from his cue card.

He began: 'This is a big week for me this week. It's really nice for me to be here. I've got tryouts. I'm going to get Petr Cech's job. Go Arsenal!'

However, the audience was presumably full of Tottenham Hotspur fans since the gag was met with a chorus of boos.

'You're not nice!', he told the crowd, while shaking his head.

The microphone then picked up Danny's voice saying, 'I was told I didn't need to read the names out?', when he realised the headshots of the nominees were being flashed up on the screen behind him.

As he handed out the trophy to Bodyguard favourite Richard, he declared: 'I really dig your show.'

Fans took to Twitter in their droves to comment on Danny's amusing and surprising appearance.

While some were confused, with one person tweeting, 'I actually cringed when Danny DeVito came on, wtf was the thinking behind that? #NTAs', most were delighted.

Sticking up for the Matilda favourite, one fan shared: 'Everyone that booed Danny DeVito at the NTAs should be lined up and shot. He is a five star man.'

Another reasoned: '#NTAs The people who booed when @DannyDeVito said come on the Arsenal must have been mostly Spurs fans'.

And a third enthused: 'Danny DeVito is an absolute legend#NTAs'.
