Arsenal legend Ian Wright has urged the club to sign Paris Saint Germain midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum.

With Thomas Partey and Mohamed Elneny both away on Africa Cup of Nations duties and Ainsley Maitland-Niles close to joining Roma for the rest of the season, Arsenal are short in midfield.

Former Liverpool man Wijnaldum has been linked with a return to England and Wright believes the Dutchman could be the solution to Arsenal's problems.

Speaking on The Kelly and Wrighty Show, he said: ‘I saw Wijnaldum’s name [linked with Arsenal]. That would be amazing. A loan signing from PSG.

‘Someone like that in the midfield. Of that experience. He is a Premier League winner. Just to help with the youngsters and a Sambi Lokonga just to keep it going.

‘Then, they can add to the squad and, all of a sudden, Arsenal can start challenging and challenging seriously.’

Mikel Arteta admitted his side is short on numbers and will turn to the transfer window. Speaking in his press conference on Friday, the Arsenal boss said: ‘We are very, very short at the moment.

'So obviously we are going to move, and we are going to look for options, because we are very short.’

During his time at Liverpool, Wijnaldum made 237 appearances for the club, helping them win the Premier League and the Champions League.

Following a woeful start to the season, Arsenal currently sit fourth in the league. Their attention will turn to the FA Cup when they take on Nottingham Forest on Sunday.
