James Maddison has withdrawn from the England squad for their Euro 2024 qualifiers against Malta and North Macedonia with an ankle injury.
The news was confirmed by Tottenham Hotspur, who said that the star would remain with the club to rehabilitate from the knock picked up during their 4-1 defeat to Chelsea on Monday night.
Spurs posted on X (formerly Twitter): 'We can confirm that James Maddison has been withdrawn from the England squad due to an ankle injury.
'The midfielder will not feature in the Three Lions' UEFA EURO 2024 qualifiers against Malta and North Macedonia, and will remain at Hotspur Way for rehabilitation with the Club's medical staff.'
It means the playmaker is set to miss Spurs' lunchtime trip to Wolves on Saturday.
Maddison went to ground untouched in the penalty box during the first half against the Blues, and limped off before half time - as did Micky van de Ven, who was forced off with a hamstring problem.
