Olympique de Marseille full-back Jonathan Clauss (31) has announced that he expects to stay with Les Phocéens next season, barring unexpected movement in the summer transfer window.
Speaking to Le Journal du Dimanche, the former RC Lens man looked back on his team’s season and a mixed campaign on a personal level, an indifferent Ligue 1 campaign (Marseille are currently 8th) counterbalanced by a brilliant UEFA Europa League campaign, with a semi-final second leg against Serie A outfit Atalanta in Bergamo to come this Thursday after a 1-1 draw at the Vélodrome in the first leg.
The up and down nature of the club’s season has been personified by Clauss, with a great start tempered by injuries and a subsequent loss of form that led to public criticism from club president Pablo Longoria, followed by an upturn in fortunes under current coach Jean-Louis Gasset:
So where does this leave the French full-back?
For now, Clauss’s focus will be on staking a claim to be included in Didier Deschamps’ squad for EURO 2024, with the coach’s squad list to be announced next week and the tournament itself kicking off in just five weeks.
