'Klopp's Kids' will return in FA Cup after Liverpool's Carabao Cup triumph

  /  autty

Liverpool's quadruple bid saw its first big success on Sunday when the Reds beat Chelsea to the Carabao Cup trophy, in a nail-biting 1-0 win in extra-time, but there are still three more competitions to play for.

The only problem for Jurgen Klopp and his swansong season, and it's a sizeable one, is that his squad are dropping like flies at the moment.

In addition to no fewer than 12 - yes you read correctly - first-team injuries, his side just played two hours of football on Sunday in a bruising encounter with Chelsea at Wembley.

As a result, and with four games coming up in a 12-day period including a clash with Manchester City at the end of it, Klopp may be scratching his head over what XI to name for Wednesday's FA Cup clash with Southampton in the fifth round.

Here Mail Sport takes a look at how the Reds might line up against Southampton in the FA Cup fifth round on Wednesday, with an average age of just 21.2!

Goalkeeper

Caoimhin Kelleher

It sometimes feels like the young Irish stopper is ever the bridesmaid but never the bride - now though he has a chance to take the limelight with Alisson out injured.

Kelleher has been restricted to cup competitions for most of his Liverpool career, only ever playing 10 Premier League matches with five of those coming this term.

However he was fantastic at the weekend against Chelsea, coming up with two seismic saves to keep the Reds in with a shout.

Kelleher may be a back-up goalkeeper at Anfield but he would surely do a brilliant job on a more prominent basis at most other Premier League sides, and is a great option with the gloves to come in and deputise for Alisson.

Defenders

Conor Bradley, Joe Gomez, Jarell Quansah, Kostas Tsimikas

In Jurgen Klopp's back four on Wednesday there could be two academy graduates filling in for injured Joel Matip and Trent Alexander-Arnold and the surely worn out Virgil van Dijk.

At right back it is likely to be Conor Bradley, whos started on Sunday but was hooked at 72 minutes for fellow teenager Bobby Clarke, and will be comparatively well-rested. Oh the freshness of youth.

He has been enthralling on the field this term, making a splash after Alexander-Arnold was first sidelined with an impressive performance against the Blues that saw him provide a goal and two assists back in January.

He is likely to start on the right alongside a central defensive partnership of Joe Gomez and Jarell Quansah, with the 21-year-old filling in with Van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate playing the bulk of Sunday's clash.

Quansah has been impressive in his first season in the senior set up, earning 20 appearances under Klopp and a goal in the Europa League.

Gomez meanwhile provides a more experienced head to a backline that is far from full strength, but with so many injuries piling up Klopp will be keen to rotate as much as possible.

One player who is only recently returned from injury is Andy Robertson, and the Scot - who has emerged as a shock target for Bayern Munich - is set to miss out with Kostas Tsimikas coming in.

Tsimikas came off the bench at Wembley to good effect, and the Greece international is likely to feature from the start at Anfield on Wednesday.

Midfielders

Bobby Clark, James McConnell, Trey Nyoni

Midfield is more a case of who is still standing for Klopp at the moment, with Ryan Gravenberch and Dominik Szoboszlai on the treatment table, as is Curtis Jones Stefan Bajcetic, and Thiago Alcantara, while Watar Endu was seen leaving Wembley with a protective boot after complaining of stiffness.

As such, it is a massively inexperienced trio that could take the field on Wednesday for the meeting with the Saints in the FA Cup, a tilt at the quadruple very much on the line.

Bobby Clark lines up alongside James McConnell and Trey Nyoni, the Newcastle-born youngster a comparative veteran with some seven appearances for the Reds to date.

McConnell meanwhile can call upon a whole five games - including an assist in the FA Cup against Norwich having started the 5-2 win.

Nyoni on the other hand may have been on the bench against the Blues at Wembley but is still looking for that first start - and he could find it at Anfield on Wednesday.

The 16-year-old midfielder arrived from Leicester last summer, and has only made six appearances in the Premier League 2 this term, let alone with the senior side.

Against Championship opposition you would ordinarily back the Reds nine times out of 10, but with 11 first-team appearances between their entire midfield, Southampton will feel they have a great chance - but what a night for those three young stars it could be!

Forwards

Cody Gakpo, Jayden Danns, Lewis Koumas

Mohamed Salah, Diogo Jota and Darwin Nunez are all out injured, while Luis Diaz put in a herculean effort on Sunday to play the full game up top along with Harvey Elliott.

Now that doesn't leave Klopp with a lot to work with, but at least there's Cody Gakpo, who played 87 minutes before being taken off at Wembley. Much like Bradley, he's comparatively ready to go in comparison to much of the rest of the squad.

The Dutch forward will surely be shouldering much of the responsibility for this side as one of arguably only two first-team players who could line up down on the South Coast.

Leading the line though could be Jayden Danns, who was seen celebrating the cup final win with perhaps more gusto than anyone else in the team at Wembley.

Danns has 24 goals and four assists in 33 games for the U18s, as well as two goals and two assists in five for the U21s, so he clearly has a keen eye for goal, but this would surely represent a huge step up.

On the left is set to be another youngster with a famous father - Danns is the son of former Premier League midfielder Neil Danns - Lewis Koumas.

The son of former West Brom and Wigan star Jason Koumas is in a similar boat to Nyoni in that he has never actually featured for the Reds' senior side, despite an impressive record of 12 goals in 12 youth team appearances this term.

Koumas' last appearance came some 16 days ago for the U21s in the Premier League 2 competition, but the good news for Reds fans is that he netted twice, for a fourth in just three games. Could he continue his red hot form against the Saints?
