This was a head-to-head for position as well as bitter rivalry, as only one point separated them in mid-table. Mattia Zaccagni was out of action after the Champions League win over Feyenoord, while Lorenzo Pellegrini, Chris Smalling, Marash Kumbulla and Tammy Abraham were injured as the Giallorossi shook off Thursday’s 2-0 Europa League defeat to Slavia Prague.
Bryan Cristante had the ball in the net on 13 minutes, but was visibly offside when Rick Karsdorp’s strike was beaten away by Ivan Provedel.
Karsdorp had another two opportunities in similar situations, but couldn’t keep his half-volleys on target.
Luis Alberto thought he had given Lazio the lead after 25 minutes, but the ferocious, swerving long-range strike beat Rui Patricio only to smash against the frame of the goal.
Rui Patricio did get his glove to an Alessio Romagnoli header on the Luis Alberto free kick, palming it off the line at the near bottom corner.
Luis Alberto had a much easier opportunity set up by Mateo Guendouzi only to balloon over the bar, while Romelu Lukaku surged forward from midfield only to see the finish charged down.
Gianluca Mancini shielded the Guendouzi through ball to prevent Immobile going clear, with Manuel Lazzari doing the same on Dybala’s assist for Edoardo Bove.
Rui Patricio was behind the Matias Vecino strike from distance, but the Uruguay international pulled a muscle during that move and limped off.
Whoever won this match would take a leap up the standings towards the Champions League places, but a point apiece leaves both stranded mid-table.
