Liverpool 1-0 Everton: Super-sub Origi settles derby with 96-minute winner

  /  R47

Jordan Pickford's incredible error handed Divock Origi a scarcely believable Merseyside derby winner as Liverpool claimed a dramatic 1-0 Premier League victory over Everton and kept pressure on leaders Manchester City.

Match Events

Substitute Divock Origi scored a last-gasp winner to settle the Merseyside derby in Liverpool's favour after Jordan Pickford's howler.

Everton had produced an admirable performance and could have ended their infamous Anfield hoodoo had they taken one of their numerous first-half chances, but just as it looked as if they had done enough for a point, Liverpool snatched all three in stunning circumstances.

Alisson, who had earlier brilliantly denied Andre Gomes, cleared a free-kick as far as Virgil van Dijk, whose skewed long-range effort appeared to be heading for the top of the crossbar, only for Pickford to inexplicably palm it back into the air, the ball then bouncing off the bar and into the path of Origi, who had the simple task of nodding into an empty net.

It means Liverpool – whose manager Jurgen Klopp sprinted onto the pitch to celebrate – stay within touching distance of champions Manchester City, who they trail by just two points, with the Reds continuing to look like the most likely challengers to Pep Guardiola's side.

Match reports

11' CHANCE! Mane's shot over the bar

CHANCE! Best chance of the half so far from Liverpool as Salah is the man to provide this time, chipping the ball over the top for Mane.

However, the forward thrashes his strike over the crossbar with Pickford out to put him off his target.

20' Amazing save from Alisson to deny Gomes' header

Bernard picks out Walcott over on the right before he nods it back down for Gomes in the middle of the six yard box. He heads towards goal but Alisson makes a save at point blank range.

The rebound ricochets off the body of Gomes again but Gomez races back onto the line to hack the ball away to safety. Brilliant stuff from Liverpool and that's two big chances missed from Everton!

34' Walcott runs the ball out of play in front of Alisson

CHANCE! Walcott looked to be through on goal and around Alisson after being released by Sigurdsson, but the forward’s final touch is just too heavy, and he runs the ball out of play.

47' CHANCE! Salah's shot inches wide out

CHANCE! Salah receives the ball from Wijnaldum on the edge of the visitors’ penalty area before whipping a left-footed curling shot inches wide of Pickford’s far post. Good effort.

59' WIDE AGAIN! Mane's shot grazes the post

CHANCE! After some good play down the right-hand side, a neat one-two between Salah and Mane opens up the space for the Senegalese international to try his luck from just outside the box. Mane’s curling effort just evades the far post with Pickford scrambling.

87' Mane wastes another chance!

OFF THE BAR! Alexander-Arnold’s corner from the right is flicked on by Van Dijk and Origi can do nothing but turn it onto the bar from two yards out at the back post. What a chance!

96: GOAL! Liverpool 1-0 Everton (Origi)

GOAL! In the final seconds of the game Origi heads the ball home from a matter of yards to surely win the 232nd Merseyside derby for Liverpool. Van Dijk tried his luck with an audacious volley from the edge of the box which Pickford failed to deal with and Origi was there to nod it home. Wow!
