Liverpool: Ian Rush says Jurgen Klopp's side be greatest in history if win quadruple

  /  autty

Liverpool legend Ian Rush insists the current side will eclipse his and any previous triumphant iteration in the club's history should they win the Quadruple this season.

The Reds are halfway through their quadruple quest - having enjoyed penalty shootout victories in both the Carabao Cup and FA Cup finals over Chelsea so far.

Jurgen Klopp will be desperate for his side to achieve the third part of this trophy hunt on Sunday as they battle Manchester City for the Premier League title. City currently lead Liverpool by one point into the final day of the season with Pep Guardiola's side at home to Aston Villa and their title rivals entertaining Wolves.

If Liverpool are to wrestle the title from City's grasp, that would then lead to a history-defining moment on May 28 when they face Real Madrid in the Champions League showpiece in Paris.

Rush is akin to greatness himself – having won the Treble with the Anfield outfit during the 1983-84 season (League, League Cup and European Cup).

That side under Joe Fagan remains one of the greatest in the Reds' fabled history, but Rush - who scored 346 goals in 660 games for the club – believes they could be surpassed by the class of 2022.

'Well, if they win the quadruple, they'd actually go down as the best team ever - simply because no one's done it,' he told Sportsmail exclusively at an Evening with the Liverpool Masters on behalf of Gambling.com.

'And that's why I keep saying it's a fantastic achievement to do what they have done already. But if they are to win the quadruple then they would go down in history as the best team ever.

'We won the treble in 1984 and that was some achievement but if they go and do one better they'll have to surpass it's a simple as that.

'And if they do that, then that says a lot coming from the history of Liverpool.'
