On an afternoon which brought about memories of Istanbul and their dramatic 2005 Champions League final win, the Reds ran out 3-2 winners after late Steven Gerrard heroics.
Robbie Fowler and Djibril Cisse struck to put them in control, but Andrea Pirlo curled in a beautiful free-kick before a Guiseppe Paccaro goal late on looked set to have snatched a draw.
Step forward Steven Gerrard, who manufactured space to fire in a low strike from the edge of the box and win it for the Reds and delight a sell-out 54,000 crowd raising money for the LFC Foundation.
