Mohamed Salah's luxury Cairo villa was burgled over the weekend with the thieves making away with electrical equipment, local police have reported.

Authorities were first called to the house after the Liverpool star's nephew noticed on Saturday evening that one of the windows was open.

Two police officials said on Monday that the burglars stole only TV receivers from the winger's villa in the upmarket Tagamoa area, some 30 miles east of Cairo city centre, with other 'electrical' items also taken.

A cooking gas cylinder in the 30-year-old's garden proved too heavy for the burglars to steal, the officials said.

An investigation into the robbery is ongoing and no arrests have yet been made.

'The surrounding surveillance cameras are being unloaded, and the security personnel in charge of securing the place are being interrogated,' a source told Egyptian daily newspaper Al-Ahram.

'The security services are intensifying their efforts to solve the mystery of the incident, and the necessary legal measures have been taken.'

No one was in the villa at the time of the incident.

The burglary came hours after Salah missed a penalty in Liverpool's 1-0 defeat by Bournemouth on Saturday, compounding a miserable weekend for the player known affectionately as the 'Egyptian king'.

Egypt captain Salah is due to visit his home country next week as he will lead the national team in a double-header against Malawi in African Nations Cup qualifying, a home game on March 24 and the away match four days later.

Salah, who hails from the delta town of Nagrig, last week became Liverpool's all-time top scorer in the Premier League with 129 goals.
