Manchester United are reportedly on the verge of completing the surprise signing of Japanese goalkeeper Zion Suzuki.
The Red Devils have been scouting the 20-year-old Urawa Red Diamonds stopper since 2017 and have now made their move, according to Japanese outlet Sponichi.
They report that United have made a formal offer of £5m for Suzuki, a fee that would make him the most expensive signing in the history of the J League.
The deal is now nearing completion and an announcement could be made imminently.
United's goalkeeper situation has been one of the major talking points of the window so far with David de Gea now officially a free agent.
His contract at the club expired last week but United are still in talks with the Spaniard to extend his stay at Old Trafford on reduced wages and no guarantee of being first choice.
De Gea has been posting cryptic emojis on his social media and there is every chance that a compromise over a new deal may not be found and he will depart permanently.
In that case United may be looking to bring in two keepers this summer.
Suzuki has represented Japan at every youth level but is still to make his first senior appearance.
He is only his side's No 2 at present, limited primarily to cup competition.
