Man United concerns grow after serious-looking injury to Lisandro Martinez

Paul Scholes has insisted Lisandro Martinez would be a 'huge miss' for Manchester United if he is out for a significant period after suffering a serious-looking injury.

Martinez was carried off in the 86th minute of a 2-2 draw against Sevilla on Thursday evening.

United went 2-0 up early on after two goals in seven minutes from on-loan midfielder Marcel Sabitzer, before they were pegged back after two late own goals from Tyrell Malacia and Harry Maguire.

Disaster struck just two minutes after Malacia's unfortunate intervention as centre back Martinez suddenly pulled up with no one around him.

At the time, legendary former United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel told the BBC: 'It looks very bad, there was no contact with anyone and Martinez just pulled up. That doesn't look good.'

He immediately gripped his leg and was taken off on a stretcher before his Argentina team-mates Gonzalo Montiel and Marcos Acuna, of Sevilla, helped carry him off the field in a sporting gesture.

And after the match, Paul Scholes and Owen Hargreaves had their say on the unfortunate incident.

Iconic former midfielder Scholes said: 'It is difficult for us to assume but it does look like he has done his Achilles, which is a bad one. I played a game with Nicky Butt and he did something and felt like someone had kicked him.

'When there is no one around him and you feel a pain like that, the ankle or heel goes, you have to suspect it is an Achilles. It doesn't look great.

'He would be a huge miss, he has brought real character in. He has brought strength and solidness into the team. With Varane out as well, it is probably a 50/50 game (in the second leg now.'

Fellow pundit and ex-Red Devils star Hargreaves added: 'His international team-mates carried him off which is a great gesture. He probably didn't want to come off on a stretcher, he's that type.

'My thoughts go out to him. My thoughts go out to him. We don't want to speculate but for him to go down like that, he's such a warrior.

'He is a fabulous player. He would be a big miss.'
