Manchester United goalkeeper Dean Henderson has vehemently denied 'hurtful and totally false' claims that he was the Premier League star that was arrested for assaulting his girlfriend.
The 24-year-old took to social media on Monday to deny allegations made against him online, revealing that the distressing rumours have affected his family.
Reports at the weekend revealed that a Premier League footballer, described as being 'tipped for international honours', was arrested by police in 2019 on suspicion of domestic abuse.
Following the report, social media users began to guess who the player might be with some suggesting Henderson, who has forcefully shut down the rumours on Instagram.
Henderson wrote on his Instagram story: 'Can't believe I'm having to do this but I'd just like to address the rumours that have come to light in the last couple of days.
'There are some sad people in the world that have attached my name to such inappropriate, hurtful and totally false news stories.
'I have a family who have even affected by this so wanted to put the rumours to bed and move on.'
The arrest in 2019 took place after the player's girlfriend rang the authorities, alleging an attack and claiming she received threatening messages at night. Police later seized the star, who isn't named in reports for legal reasons, at his home. He is no longer in a relationship with his accuser.
The matter was settled out of court after the player employed lawyers, with police satisfied that a 'community resolution' had been found.
The Premier League man reportedly paid a five-figure settlement sum to his ex-girlfriend to bury the matter.
Henderson revealed in the past that he was in a relationship and has shared photographs of him and his girlfriend, with his most recent picture together dating back to December 2020 – but is yet to reveal her name. It is currently unknown whether the two are still together.
