Scotland manager Steve Clarke has admitted that after Scott McTominay's impressive form for Manchester United, he may need to find a spot for him in midfield.
The 24-year-old has been playing as part of a three man defence for his country; but following his brace during Manchester United's 6-2 demolition of Leeds, his national team boss wants to play him further forward.
Clarke who successfully lead Scotland to the next summer's European Championships; told Sky Sports that he feels he's 'wasting' McTominay in defence.
'Scott's been great, I'm probably wasting him playing at centre half, but he's so adaptable and positive, he's got a confidence about him which I think rubs off on everybody around him.'
'When I spoke to him about dropping back and playing as one of the back three for me it was almost as if he was affronted that I asked him if he could do it, he said 'of course I can do it.' And he's proved that, he gives us a ball carrier from the back, gives us a little bit of composure on the ball and he's a great athlete.'
The Scotland boss was particularly impressed with his display against Leeds, McTominay scored two goals in the opening three minutes to get his side off to the perfect start.
'He's been really good for me but then I'm watching the game the other night against Leeds and I'm thinking I have to find a way to get that boy back into midfield.'
The Scottish international has already clocked up 17 appearances for Manchester United this season in all competitions, and Steve Clarke praised the midfielder for cementing his place as regular fixture in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side.
'When you look at the competition for places he's got at Man United he's more or less nailed down a starting spot in a very strong squad; and for us to see one of the Scottish boys doing so well down there is brilliant, long may it continue.'
McTominay missed Manchester United's Carabao Cup quarter final win against Everton on Wednesday through injury, the Red Devils won the tie after late goals from Edinson Cavani and Anthony Martial to set up a semi final showdown with Man City.
Next up for United is a trip to Leicester City for a lunchtime kick-off on Boxing Day.
