Thursday marks three years since Barcelona star Lionel Messi took off his shirt and displayed it to the crowd at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu after an injury-time winning goal in the Clasico, yet there have been other provocative celebrations in LaLiga Santander history over the past 25 years.
Leandro's puppy in the Calderon:
Leandro Machado had arrived at Valencia in the 1996/97 campaign's January transfer window with a desire to prove himself. His imitation of a puppy caused a stir, and he would then repeat it again soon after.
Giovanni's gesture:
Barcelona's Giovanni was initially given a two-match ban for his celebration following a goal in Barcelona's Clasico win at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu in 1997/98, although it would then be reduced to just one match for the governing body's perceived to be 'spontaneous repentance' on behalf of the Brazilian.
Fabiano's dance at Riazor:
In 1997/98, Compostela thrashed rivals Deportivo La Coruna 6-2 away from home on matchday 37 and, after scoring in that match, Fabiano Soares danced on the pitch of his team's rivals.
Raul's gesture to the Camp Nou:
Raul Gonzalez scored a very late equaliser in the October 1999 Clasico held at the Camp Nou, and he celebrated in sensational fashion, essentially shushing the home crowd with a gesture. It wasn't well received by the Catalan fans in attendance.
Real Madrid's cockroaches in Vitoria:
In September 2005, Brazilian trio Ronaldo Nazario, Roberto Carlos and Robinho performed a rather bizarre, choreographed celebration dance after Ronaldo put Los Blancos 2-0 up. With all three on their back, they actually looked like a group of cockroaches.
Griezmann kisses the Basque flag:
Antoine Griezmann caused a lot of controversy during a match between Real Sociedad and Getafe, based in the Spanish capital, Madrid, when he celebrated a goal by repeatedly kissing the Basque flag on his shirt.
Puyol steps in to stop Thiago and Alves dancing:
Barcelona eased to a 7-0 victory over Rayo Vallecano in LaLiga Santander during the 2011/12 season, and Dani Alves and Thiago Alcantara looked to celebrate one particular goal with a dance between the pair.
With the gulf between the teams so vast and Rayo facing relegation, Carles Puyol stepped in and put a stop to the dance, with it being a clear sign of disrespect towards their opponents.
Pedro Leon's kisses to the Mestalla crowd:
Pedro Leon scored for Getafe at Mestalla in 2013/14 and he blew kisses to the home crowd, who were livid.
Messi's shirt at the Bernabeu:
Real Madrid had only themselves to blame for some diabolical defensive positioning which cost them a late goal in the 2017 Clasico in Madrid. Messi punished them with a fine left-footed strike and would celebrate by removing his shirt and displaying it to the home fans in what would become an iconic image.
