Mills warns K. Phillips he would NOT be welcome in Leeds if he went to Man Utd

Kalvin Phillips has been warned that he won't be welcome back in Leeds should he sign for bitter rivals Manchester United, according to former Whites player Danny Mills.

Phillips has enjoyed a standout year after becoming an integral part of the Leeds first-team under Marcelo Bielsa when the Argentine joined the club in 2018.

His commanding performances in the centre of the pitch saw him catch the eye of Gareth Southgate before even kicking a ball in the Premier League.

The 25-year-old then excelled on the world stage as he partnered Declan Rice in England's midfield during their run to the Euro 2020 final in June, before being voted England men's player of the year.

Phillips has been linked with several top-flight clubs, and United's desire to sign a midfielder is well-documented given their pursuit of Rice at West Ham.

However, Mills suggested a move to Old Trafford could spell curtains for Phillips in his hometown. Phillips is born and raised in Leeds, and came through the club's academy.

When asked whether Phillips would be welcome in Leeds if he moved to the Red Devils, Mills told talkSPORT unequivocally: 'No'.

Mills, a former England right-back who spent the bulk of his career at Elland Road, did accept that an approach from Man United would be tough to turn down, citing others who have made the same move.

'I mean other players have done it, Rio (Ferdinand) left, Rio was only there a year, Alan Smith did it, and he's not particularly welcome back in Leeds now.

'Kalvin is Leeds through and through but if they come knocking…'

Mills said he would 'never (have) played for Man United… well I never got asked!'

'He (Phillips) is an outstanding player, we know that, he's absolutely superb. His performances for England have put him on a whole new level.

'There will be a lot of interest from a lot of clubs.'

West Ham's £90million valuation of Rice is believed to be a factor in United's interest in Phillips, and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is also said to be a big fan.
