New FIFA rules applied when the ball touched the referee in Tottenham game

You may know Harry Kane scored a late brace to seal a 3-1 comeback win for Tottenham against Aston Villa, but there was a moment much harder to notice in the game.

In the 40th minute, a new football rule was applied for the first time in the new season when Villa captain Jack Grealish's pass hit straight the referee.

The referee's intervention directly led to a possession change as Moussa Sissoko had the ball at his feet.

According to the Laws of the Game 2019/20, if the ball touches the referee or other match officials and goes into the goal, possession changes or an attacking move starts, the play should be restarted with a dropped ball.

So the referee just stopped the game and dropped the ball to restart it, giving back the possession to Villa.
