Eddie Howe came out in a suit to pay respect to Queen Elizabeth II before Newcastle's meeting with Bournemouth - and then changed into a tracksuit to shout instructions from the touchline.
The Magpies hosted Howe's former side in their first match since the death of Her Majesty, The Queen, last week at the age of 96.
As part of changes to the typical Premier League pre-game protocol, a minute's silence was held at each ground before matches started, and for this, Newcastle manager Howe came out in a suit.
However later images showed that the 44-year-old had switched out of the formal attire for his tracksuit to conduct his players with instructions and tactics against the Cherries, a side Howe has a significant amount of history with as a player and then as a manager.
Other changes in normal matchday protocol included the absence of the Premier League's usual choice of pre-match music, and a rendition of the National Anthem.
Clubs ditched the traditional handshake before the match, instead coming together in the centre circle to pay a silent tribute to Elizabeth II, nine days after her death.
Howe came through the youth system at Bournemouth as a young player, making over 270 appearances for the club.
He also managed the Cherries for two spells between 2008 and 2020, helping to guide them from fourth-tier English football to the Premier League.
He joined Newcastle in November 2021 after a change of ownership at the club, and helped them to a run of good performances towards the back end of last season, and at the beginning of the 2022-23 campaign.
The game ended in a 1-1 draw, after Alexander Isak's penalty cancelled out Philip Billing's opener for the visitors.
