Borussia Dortmund is strengthening its squad with the Brazilian full-back Yan Couto (22). BVB has agreed on a loan with Couto's previous club Manchester City until June 30, 2025. In the event that certain sporting criteria are met in the coming season, all parties have also agreed on a permanent transfer following the loan period.
Couto, a Brazilian international since October 2023 (4 matches), most recently played on loan for Spanish first division club Girona FC and developed into one of the strongest full-backs on the Iberian peninsula (59 La Liga games, 2 goals, 12 assists). The 22-year-old surprisingly finished the 2023/24 season in third place with his club.
On Friday he arrived in Zurich by flight from Sao Paulo and completed the obligatory medical check in Bad Ragaz (Switzerland), where BVB is currently in its summer training camp. Today Couto, who will wear the number 2 shirt in Dortmund, is training with his new teammates for the first time.
Borussia Dortmund's sports director, Lars Ricken, says: "We already had Yan Couto on our radar before he won the U17 World Cup with Brazil in 2019. Yan can become a very special player. He offers speed, technique and wit at the highest level. He is very young, can still learn a lot, and yet we trust him to be able to continue the history of special Brazilian players at BVB."
"Yan Couto is an extremely exciting player. He can work the entire wing, combines exceptional dynamism with intensity, technical finesse and dribbling ability. Yan can be used in a variety of ways, loves one-on-one duels, can deliver precise crosses and has a strong offensive drive. His development in Spain was remarkable, and yet he still has a lot of potential for development. This means he fits perfectly into the profile we were looking for for this position group. We are very pleased that we were able to convince him of our approach," says BVB sports director Sebastian Kehl.
"It's a dream come true for me. Borussia Dortmund is a special club. Every child in Brazil knows the greatness of this club, knows the fans and is fascinated by the Yellow Wall," says Yan Couto, adding: "I can hardly wait to wear the BVB jersey for the first time and experience the power and emotions in this great stadium."
