Alex Song has announced his retirement from professional football.

In 2012, Barcelona surprised many by completing the signing of Song from Arsenal. The Cameroonian midfielder joined for a reported fee of £15m, but would only spend two years in Catalonia before returning to the Premier League with West Ham United, and then joining Rubin Kazan on a permanent basis in 2016.

Famously, Song admitted in 2022 that he was told that he wouldn’t play much at Barcelona, but he did not care due to the wages that he would be receiving.

“When Barcelona offered me a contract and I saw how much I would earn, I didn’t think twice. I felt that my wife and children should have a comfortable life once I finish my degree. I met the Sporting Director and he told me I wouldn’t play many games, but I didn’t care, I knew I would become a millionaire now. I didn’t give a s*** about being a bench warmer at the Camp Nou because of the money I was making.”

Song did not make a very big impact at Barcelona, more so at Arsenal and Bastia, although he will probably still look back on his time in Catalonia with some fondness.

"My journey that began in Yaoundé as a child, playing with no boots, in bare feet and on hard gravel, gave me the strength and courage to succeed.

"When I moved to France, playing for Bastia I thought I had achieved a miracle. However, this was only the start as my journey continued to Arsenal and Barcelona, two of the greatest clubs in the World.

"So many people have helped me along the way, my wife, my kids, family, friends, my agent, coaches and of course all my teammates whom I will forever be grateful.

"Of course Charlton, West Ham, Rubin Kazan, Sion and Arta/Solar 7 will always remain in my heart.

"Having the honour of representing my country also filled me with great pride. I feel blessed with so many great memories that will remain with me forever.

"Lastly, I would like to thank all the fans who have supported me along the way, I will treasure everything. I hope to see you all again soon."

The news comes just days after Song visited his old stomping ground - the Emirates Stadium.

The former Gunner was present for Arsenal's 3-1 victory over Burnley and was presented with a shirt by the club.

Song made over 200 appearances for the North London side before moving to Barcelona in 2012.
