On this day in 2007 - Guardiola appointed as manager of Barcelona B
On 21 June 2007, Guardiola was appointed coach of Barcelona B on 21 June 2007 with Tito Vilanova as his assistant.
Under his guidance, the team subsequently won their Tercera División group and qualified for the 2008 Segunda División B playoffs, which the team won, thereby achieving promotion.
FC Barcelona President Joan Laporta announced in May 2008 that Guardiola would be appointed manager of the senior Barcelona squad to replace Frank Rijkaard at the end of the 2007–08 season. According to a 2013 biography of Michael Laudrup, he and not Guardiola was Laporta's first choice.
On this day in 2002 - Ronaldinho's Brazil beat England 2-1 in World Cup
England's World Cup campaign was brought to an abrupt halt as 10-man Brazil triumphed in the quarter-final in Shizuoka.
Goals from Rivaldo and Ronaldinho either side of half-time cancelled out a thrilling opener from Michael Owen, which had given English fans hope of recording a famous victory. A blunder by David Seaman handed Brazil the winner, as Ronaldinho's speculative free-kick caught the veteran goalkeeper flat-footed and went in off the underside of the bar.
Brazil survived the controversial dismissal of the game's central figure, Ronaldinho, and deservedly won to become the first team to reach the last four.
On this day in 2018 - Mbappe scored his 1st goal at World Cup
Mbappe went on to become the second teenager to score in a World Cup final after Pele.
France needed a lone first-half strike from teenage sensation Kylian Mbappe to edge past Peru and end the South American's hopes of reaching Russia 2018's Round of 16. France's all-star side were made to work overtime before subduing a brave Peru in front of a buoyant South American-flavoured crowd.
La Blanquirroja enjoyed good periods throughout the match and were outplayed only in the final quarter-hour of the first half. It was at that point that Mbappe broke the deadlock with a close-range tap-in. It proved enough for France to maintain their lead at the top of Group C and shore up a ticket to the last-16.
Peru can consider themselves unlucky with Paolo Guerrero denied and Pedro Aquino hitting the post. Peru's campaign is over after successive 1-0 defeats.
On this day in 1955 - Michel Platini was born
Michel Platini (born 21 June 1955) is a French former football player, manager and administrator. Regarded as one of the greatest footballers of all time, Platini won the Ballon d'Or three times, in 1983, 1984 and 1985, and came sixth in the FIFA Player of the Century vote.
In recognition of his achievements, he was named a Chevalier of the Légion d'honneur in 1985 and became an Officier in 1998. As the president of UEFA in 2015 he was banned from football, over ethics violations.
During his career, Platini played for the clubs Nancy, Saint-Etienne, and Juventus. Nicknamed Le Roi (The King) for his ability and leadership. He won the Serie A capocannoniere award three consecutive times between 1983 and 1985, and was the top scorer of Juventus's victorious 1984–85 European Cup campaign.
Platini was a key player of the France national team that won the 1984 European Championship, a tournament in which he was the top scorer and best player, and reached the semi-finals of the 1982 and 1986 World Cups.
Platini was his country's record goalscorer until 2007, and holds the record for most goals (9) scored in the European Championship despite only appearing in the victorious 1984 edition.
Following his retirement as a player, Platini was the France national team coach for four years, and was the co-organizer of the 1998 World Cup in France. In 2007, he was elected as the president of the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA). He was the first former player to become UEFA President.
He also held the positions of chairman of FIFA's Technical and Development Committee and vice-president of the French Football Federation. In 2015, however, he was banned from football administration for conflict of interest by the FIFA Ethics Committee.
On this day in 1970 - Brazil became 1st team to win three WC trophies
On 21 June 1970, Brazil became the first team to win three World Cup trophies, beating Italy 4-1 in that year's Final. In that match, Pelé became the first (and to date only) player to win three trophies and Brazil manager Mario Zagallo became the first person to win trophies as a player and coach.
Playing before a crowd of 107,412 at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, Pelé opened the scoring with a powerful 18th-minute header. Italy found a first-half equalizer in the 37th minute thanks to confusion between Brazilian keeper Félix and defender Hércules Brito.
Level at 1-1 at the break, the second half belonged to Brazil. Gerson put them up 2-1 with a low driving shot from outside the box in the 66th minute. Five minutes later, a long pass found Pelé in the box and he headed the ball down into the path of the charging Jairzinho, who bundled it into the net. The scoring ended in the 86th minute as a precise Brazilian build-up involving eight different players resulted in a Pelé pass to captain Carlos Alberto, who blasted the ball home from about 10 yards out.
With their third World Cup title, Brazil were allowed to keep the trophy. Unfortunately, it was stolen in 1983 and has never been recovered.
On this day in 1931 - Juventus won their 3rd Scudetto
On 21 June 1931, Juventus tied up the league title, beating Ambrosiana Inter 1-0 as Orsi got the winning goal on 38 minutes. The goal ended Roma's title challenge – they had been chasing the Bianconeri in second place – with one game to spare.
It is the first of five straight Scudetti for Juventus.
