On this day in 1947, Santiago Bernabeu hosted its first match. Real Madrid played Os Belenenses from Portugal in the opening game and the legend of one of the great stadiums in the history of sports began. That friendly ended in a 3-1 win for the Whites, with goals being scored by Barinaga and Chus Alonso.
Seven decades later, Real Madrid have won a multitude of trophies at home and seen the best players in the world grace it’s turf. Di Stéfano, Gento, Amancio, Butragueño, Raúl and Cristiano Ronaldo are some examples of footballers who will always be linked to the history of the Whites’ stadium.
