Owen picks Shearer to start up front in England XI since his debut

Michael Owen picked Alan Shearer ahead of himself in his all-time England XI since his debut, despite having a feud with his former Newcastle team-mate.

The two strikers' differences were shot into the spotlight last year when Owen released his autobiography, in which he had a pop at the former Newcastle striker and legend.

Owen suggested that the Premier League's all-time top goalscorer was not as loyal to Newcastle as many would believe.

Shearer had suggested that Owen was not professional near the end of his time at St James' Park. Owen joined the Toon from Real Madrid in 2005 and stayed the the club until 2009, when Shearer was appointed as manager.

Newcastle were relegated from the Premier League under Shearer's guidance and Owen accused Shearer of using him as a scapegoat for his failed spell in the hot-seat.

However, he put rivalries aside as he named his greatest England XI of all time with the likes of David Beckham, Wayne Rooney and Frank Lampard all featuring.

When choosing his best England team, he told BBC Sport: 'He (Shearer) was then a big influence in me going to Newcastle United and we were big mates at that point.

'On the big stage, if you're thinking, 'I need someone to finish or take a penalty', he had absolute nerves of steel. He had a huge amount of self-belief and confidence.'

Shearer made 60 appearances for England, scoring 33 goals for the Three Lions from 1992 to 2000.

Owen also had a lot of praise for Rooney, who he chose ahead of himself also. He  added: 'When Wayne came into the squad I saw a little bit of myself in him in terms of him being fearless. His first training session, when he was only a pup, he was chipping the goalkeepers and things like that.

'Even though you can do it you tend to be a bit more respectful to senior England players, but he was just so naive and such a free spirit that it almost left you with your mouth open thinking, 'Wow, the confidence of this kid.'
