PL father and son duos to have played in the top flight over the years

  /  autty

First there was Gary and then there was Phil. Now, could the latter's son Harvey be the latest Neville to play for Manchester United?

The 18-year-old, who is a defender like both dad Phil and his uncle Gary were, signed a one-year professional deal with the Old Trafford outfit after turning 18 late last month.

While Neville junior has a long way to go to force his way into the Red Devils' first team, Sportsmail have looked at some of the previous father and son duos to have played in the Premier League and how they fared...

PETER SCHMEICHEL AND KASPER SCHMEICHEL

Premier League appearances combined: 516

Like a team sheet, this list has started with a goalkeeper. And here we just don't have one but two - both who have won the Premier League.

Peter and Kasper Schmeichel are the most successful pair combined on this list. The former was part of the Manchester United dynasty in the 1990s, while his son was an integral member of Leicester City's title triumph in 2015-16.

Peter made 310 appearances over nine seasons in the Premier League - the first seven with United (1992-99) before having a stint at Aston Villa (2001-02) and Manchester City (2002-03).

Schmeichel senior won five Premier League titles while at United alongside three FA Cups, one Champions League and one European Super Cup.

Meanwhile, Schmeichel junior has made 206 appearances in the Premier League. He made eight at City (2007-09). The rest have come at Leicester with the Dane playing all 38 matches of their fairytale 2015-16 season.

STEVE BRUCE AND ALEX BRUCE

Premier League appearances combined: 196

Peter Schmeichel's former Manchester United captain Steve Bruce is another who has seen his son sample Premier League football too.

Just like his father was, Alex is a centre back. However, he hasn't been able to enjoy the heights that his dad did. Bruce senior is a legend at Old Trafford - winning the Premier League three times in four seasons (1992-93, 1993-94 and 1995-96) as well as winning the FA Cup three times.

He wasn't just a defensive rock either and had a knack of scoring important goals - with his brace in a 2-1 win over Sheffield Wednesday in 1992-93 proving integral to their title triumph.

The 59-year-old, who played 148 games in the Premier League with United, is now a manager and currently in charge of boyhood club Newcastle United.

Bruce has managed other clubs in the top-flight such as Birmingham City and Hull City. At both of those he signed his son with Alex's 48 Premier League appearances coming then. Now 35, he is currently playing for Kilmarnock.

PAUL INCE AND TOM INCE

Premier League appearances combined: 354

Playing alongside Schmeichel senior and Bruce senior in those early United sides of the 1990s was Paul Ince.

The midfielder won two Premier League titles during that period (1992-93 and 1993-94) before leaving for Inter Milan in the summer of the 1995.

Upon returning to England he signed for Liverpool in 1997 before having spells at Middlesbrough and Wolves. Overall he made 308 Premier League appearances.

Like his father, Tom also plays in midfield but instead out wide. Having come through the ranks at Liverpool, he didn't get a taste of Premier League football until he was out on loan at Crystal Palace from parent club Blackpool. The following season he signed for Hull City and made seven appearances. Two years later he was back in the top flight with Huddersfield Town - where he featured 33 times.

Now 28, Ince is playing for Stoke City in the Championship.

ROB LEE AND ELLIOT LEE

Premier League appearances combined: 282

An England team-mate of Ince, Rob Lee is another who has played in the Premier League and since seen his son follow in his footsteps.

Lee senior was a stalwart of the Newcastle side between 1993 and 2002 - making 267 Premier League appearances in that time and scoring 34 goals. He came close to winning a title with the club during the 1996-97 season when they were pipped to the title by Manchester United.

After leaving Newcastle in February 2002, Lee finished the campaign at top-flight strugglers Derby County who were later relegated.

Lee has two footballing sons and it's the younger of the two, Elliot, who has sampled Premier League football. Now at Luton Town, the striker played twice in the Premier League for his first club West Ham.

STEVE POTTS AND DAN POTTS

Premier League appearances combined: 206

More names on this list with West Ham connections are Steve and Dan Potts.

The former is somewhat of a club legend and spent all but one year of his professional career at Upton Park. During his time in the Premier League he racked up 204 appearances for the club.

Dan Potts came through the Hammers' academy and made two appearances for the club during the 2012-13 campaign. He is now at Luton Town with Elliot Lee.

IAN WRIGHT, SHAUN AND BRADLEY WRIGHT-PHILLIPS

Premier League appearances combined: 560

Steve Potts and Ian Wright were team-mates at West Ham when the latter joined the club in July 1998. Wright spent 15 months at Upton Park and made 22 Premier League appearances during that time.

However, the striker is renowned for his spell at Arsenal beforehand. In the Premier League era there, Wright played in 191 top-flight games and scored 104 goals.

During this period he won the league and FA Cup double (1997-98), alongside three other major honours.

Wright's oldest son, Shaun came through the ranks at Manchester City where he dazzled fans with his pace and trickery on the right wing. His displays there earned him a move to Chelsea in 2005 where he won the league and FA Cup in his first campaign.

His younger brother Bradley also came through the City ranks where he made 32 Premier League appearances for the club between 2004-06. The striker though is best known in America for shining at New York Red Bulls where he is the club's all-time leading goalscorer. He is now at Los Angeles FC.

ALAN CORK AND JACK CORK

Premier League appearances combined: 310

A club legend at Wimbledon, Alan Cork had two years in the Premier League with Sheffield United (1992-94) where he scored five league goals in 46 matches.

His son Jack though continues to carry the Cork name in the Premier League.

The central midfielder has made 264 appearances in the top flight for Southampton, Swansea and Burnley. Currently with the latter, he has featured 30 times in the league for Sean Dyche's side this season.

GORDON STRACHAN AND GAVIN STRACHAN

Premier League appearances combined: 109

Just like the Bruces, father Gordon had the pleasure of managing his son, Gavin, in the Premier League. That was while the pair were both at Coventry. Strachan junior played 14 Premier League matches for Coventry under his father.

Those proved to be his only top-flight appearances as he couldn't match the feats of Strachan senior with the pair's working relationship coming to an end when the club was relegated in 2000-01.

Gordon though, enjoyed a better stint in the Premier League as a player. A title winner in the old First Division at Leeds, Strachan played two full seasons in the Premier League with the Elland Road side before moving to Coventry in March 1995.
