The vast majority of footballers will have long since hung up their boots by the time they reach their 40th birthday.
Not so Claudio Pizarro, whose astonishing longevity means he is still leading the line for Werder Bremen in the Bundesliga as he enters his fifth decade.
The evergreen Peruvian striker celebrates his 40th on Wednesday and can reflect with enormous satisfaction on a career that has seen him over 300 club goals in approaching 750 matches.
The majority of Pizarro's career has been spent in the Bundesliga, with Werdern Bremen and Bayern Munich chiefly, and brief spells with Chelsea and Cologne thrown in.
With 192 goals in the division, Pizarro lies fifth on the all-time list of Bundesliga goalscorers.
And though most of his contributions nowadays come off the bench in what is his fourth spell with Bremen, he clearly feels he has plenty more to offer.
'I feel good. I'm not sure if I feel better than five years ago, but I do feel good,' Pizarro told German outlet DW.
'I keep playing and they obviously brought me here because they think I have the chance and the ability to contribute to the club with my skills on the pitch.
'On the other hand, they also appreciate my experience. They think I can be very useful in helping the young players and maybe anticipate some situations before others do.'
It was during Pizarro's two spells with Bayern that Pizarro won the bulk of his career honours, including six Bundesliga titles, five German Cups and the Champions League in 2013.
However, it was with Bremen that he recorded his two most prolific seasons - scoring 28 goals in the 2008-09 campaign and 29 the season after.
That was just after his brief spell in the Premier League with Chelsea, where he scored just twice in 32 matches and quickly became surplus to requirements when Avram Grant replaced Jose Mourinho.
In addition, Pizarro played 85 times for Peru, scoring 20 times during a 17-year international career.
