Premier League captains accused of using their agenda in Project Restart meeting

This week's Premier League meeting has been branded a 'disaster' after fresh discussions to discuss the season's possible restart next month.

The MEN understands Chelsea captain Cesar Azpilicueta, West Ham skipper Mark Noble, and Watford leader Troy Deeney were the most vocal in airing their reservations on a conference call on Wednesday.

Chelsea occupy the final Champions League spot but are only three points ahead of Manchester United, while Watford and West Ham are level on 27 points with Bournemouth - in the relegation zone.

The resumption date could now be pushed back to June 19 and the majority of Premier League managers and players are believed to be frustrated by certain clubs said to be using their agenda to block any progress.

A source told the MEN: "The meeting was a disaster. Everyone has an agenda and the Premier League has to make decisions and stop listening to everyone."

Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho was targeted in the fall-out from Wednesday's conference call after he took umbrage with certain concerns and expressed his dismay at reports he was blocking the season restart.

"I don't think my position in the manager's meeting has been reflected fairly in media," Mourinho said in a statement released by Spurs. "I have not asked for any delay. I want to train and am desperate for the Premier League to return as soon as it is safe, particularly now we are seeing other leagues preparing to return to action.

"I am extremely proud of the way players have maintained fitness - they have shown great professionalism, passion and dedication. We have been working extremely hard through remote squad training sessions and isolated running now the pitches are available to use again at training centre.

"Every player has been extremely committed in terms of their individual work and now we wait for clearance to commence working in small groups again, which I will fully support."

Chelsea's chances of Champions League qualification next season are particularly precarious as they are 3-0 down after the first leg of their round-of-16 tie with Bayern Munich.

United could return to the Champions League via a fourth-place finish in the Premier League or by winning the Europa League, provided the domestic and European competitions resume.

The club that finishes fifth - currently occupied by United - will take Manchester City's place in the Champions League unless they are successful in their appeal against their two-year ban from Uefa competitions.
