Rangnick's new sports psychologist is Timo Werner's father-in-law to-be

Ralf Rangnick's new sports psychologist at Manchester United, Sascha Lense, is the father-in-law-to-be of Chelsea star - and rumoured Old Trafford target - Timo Werner.

Rangnick, 63, kickstarted his stint at United with a 1-0 victory against Crystal Palace, and he has also begun to overhaul the club off the field after making two additions to his backroom staff.

Lense, joined RB Leipzig in 2015 and then worked heavily under United's new interim boss before Ralph Hasenhuttl's appointment. He has also been at Dynamo Dresden and Schalke in recent years.

And he has a famous future son-in-law, too, namely Blues ace Werner, adding a twist to a potential big-money transfer saga which may burst into life this winter.

During Werner's time at Leipzig between 2016 and 2020, he met Lense's daughter, Paula. They then fell in love, and have been in a relationship since 2017.

When the Germany frontman moved to London last year for his switch to Chelsea, Paula followed him and went on to study English.

After Rangnick's recruitment behind the scenes, Lense, 46, will also fly to England - and if recent reports are to be believed, he may have a say in Werner's next move.

According to BILD, the United manager - who has penned a six-month deal and will hold a two-year advisory role after - is interested in swooping for the Chelsea man.

Intriguingly, the same report adds that Rangnick is lining up the transfer for next summer, when his contract at Old Trafford would have come to an end.

He oversaw the career of Werner at Leipzig before he headed to Stamford Bridge, and is also said to be close to Blues head coach Thomas Tuchel.

Werner has endured a testing time at Chelsea after he joined for £47.5million, and has scored just 15 goals in 64 appearances so far.

But despite him being regularly criticised for his prolificacy, Werner netted 34 goals in his final season in the Bundesliga under Rangnick, who is aware of his ability.

The reported interest in Werner comes as somewhat of a surprise in light of United strengthening their ranks with Cristiano Ronaldo and Jadon Sancho in the summer.

The duo have joined the likes of Marcus Rashford, Mason Greenwood, Edinson Cavani and Anthony Martial in what is a mouth-watering United attack.

Meanwhile, as well as bringing in Lense, Rangnick has moved for another assistant coach in Chris Armas, the former New York Red Bulls and Toronto manager.

Both men will get to work at Carrington once their visas are granted, and Rangnick has stressed the particular importance that Lense will have to train his stars' brains.

'I don't know what the situation is like here, but in Germany most clubs have employed sports psychologists or mental coaches - whatever you would like to call them,' Rangnick said.

'For me it is absolutely logical. If you have specialist coaches for goalkeeping, physical education, strikers, fitness, you should also have an expert for the brain.

'For me it is about helping the players understand that the brain should assist the body, not work against it. The players and everybody in our team should think in the right way.

'Whenever we speak about football, we know that the major part is up here: what do you think? How do you analyse the situation?

'I'm very happy to have Sascha on board. For me, it is vital that we should have the best possible person in this job.'
