Real 0-0 Atleti (AET, 4-1 on pen): Courtois & Ramos settle dour Supercopa final

  /  R47

After a frustrating encounter, Sergio Ramos kept his cool to slot in the winning penalty as Real Madrid claimed the Supercopa de Espana.

Match Report

Real Madrid won their 11th Supercopa de Espana title as Sergio Ramos tucked home the winning spot-kick to see off city rivals Atletico Madrid 4-1 in a penalty shootout after a dismal goalless draw.

With Atleti having failed to convert their opening two penalties, Madrid captain Ramos proved their nemesis again when he sent Jan Oblak the wrong way.

Federico Valverde and Alvaro Morata - against his former club - spurned the best opportunities of a dour 90 minutes at King Abdullah Sports City stadium on Sunday, though the quality did improve in extra-time.

However, a string of excellent saves from both goalkeepers, either side of Valverde's late red card, forced penalties, with Saul Niguez and Thomas Partey missing from the spot.

Ramos kept his composure to take the title back to Santiago Bernabeu after Dani Carvajal, Rodrygo and Luka Modric also hit the target from 12 yards.

Match Events

13' CLOSE! Felix’s shot wide out

Atletico get a free-kick on their right flank as Trippier is booted in the chest by Isco. Isco's lucky not to be booked for that. Atletico take it quickly and pressure Ramos into a blind ball back across his box. It bobbles straight to Felix on the edge of the area who drags his shot wide!

38' SAVE! Oblack denies Mendy's effort

Mendy races to latch onto Ramos' direct ball towards the byline, knocking it past Trippier to get into the box. The Frenchman aims low for the near post and Oblak drops to catch it.

52' Jovic's shot inches wide!

Atletico overcommits forward again and Madrid come even closer this time! Jovic bursts forward, teasing Atletico's defenders, before letting rip with a left-footer from the edge of the box. The shot rolls just.

68' CLOSE! Valverde misses a golden chance!

What a miss by Valverde! Rodrygo rolls Jovic in to the right of Atletico's box. The Serb crosses and the ball loops up for Valverde who accidentally heads into his own knee from six yards out! That should have been 1-0 Madrid.

80' CLOSE! Morata misses a great chance!

Thomas sets Correa off down the right. Correa holds the ball up and waits for Morata bursting towards goal before looping a ball in for him. Morata shoots and Courtois keeps it out at the near post! It's an Atletico corner that's headed out for another.

111' Yellow Card! Valverde booked

Valverde is booked for dissent after questioning a free-kick given against Carvajal on Arias.

115' Red Card! Valverde sent off!!! And Carvajal, SavicCorrea booked

Modric's free-kick causes chaos in the Atletico box and they eventually scramble it clear to counter! Morata beats Valverde and is through on goal but Valverde cynically brings him down. It's an obvious goalscoring opportunity, and Madrid are down to 10 men!

All hell breaks loose from that free-kick as the tension spills over among the players. Carvajal is one of several players to be booked. Correa & Savic are also booked for his involvement in the melee.
