Ronaldo's bizarre New Year's post reduces social media users to hysterics

Cristiano Ronaldo has left his social media followers in hysterics after posting a bizarre New Year's message on Instagram.

After enduring a rollercoaster year, which saw him quit Juventus and seal a homecoming at Manchester United, the superstar took the time to reflect back.

But instead of thanking his family and followers, as many other players have during the festive period, the relentless forward instead highlighted his goal tally first.

Having netted 47 goals across 2021 in all competitions, Ronaldo shared his pride for his achievement. The end result, however, was a hilarious meltdown online.

'2021 is coming to an end and it was far from being an easy year, despite my 47 goals scored across all competitions,' Ronaldo wrote at the beginning of his post.

Twitter was quickly awash with users taking aim at him, however.

One person said: '2021 was a tough year, but hey: at least we had Cristiano Ronaldo's 47 goals across all competitions.'

Another posted: 'Despite my 47 goals... Ronaldo is so full of himself it's actually laughable. Also why is he commenting on his own post?'

'I was saying to the Mrs only last night, if it weren't for Cristiano Ronaldo's 47 goals across all competitions last year, I'm not sure where I'd be... #thankyou,' a third said.

Another wrote: 'Ronaldo is shameless, man said despite my "47 goals". Messi posted his trophies, awards and, most importantly, his Ballon d'Or.

'See what people's GOAT said.'

A fifth said: 'Woke up a bit emotional thinking about how hard 2021 was, but then I remembered Cristiano Ronaldo scored 47 goals across all competitions, and now I feel better.

'All jokes aside, what an absolutely narcissistic weirdo. Here's to 2022.'

Not everyone criticised Ronaldo's choice of wording, though.

One user stood up for him, writing: 'Ronaldo tweeted that the year wasn't an easy year despite scoring 47 goals.

'How is that a problem to you guys? Like, what's wrong with that post?'
