Chelsea sign Saul
Chelsea would leave it late, but they officially announced they had signed Saul Niguez on a season-long loan from Atletico Madrid shortly before midnight on Tuesday:
Said deal is said to include an option to buy for around £30m next summer.
Saul had been on Atletico’s books since he joined from Real Madrid’s youth ranks in 2008.
In that time he notched 340 appearances for the Spanish outfit, scoring 43 goals and assisting 20.
Saul reveals Chelsea promise
The 26-year-old will now add some serious quality to Chelsea’s midfield, which has had a few issues over the last couple of years due to N’Golo Kante’s continuing injury woes.
Ahead of making his Chelsea debut, Saul has spoken about the competition he is expecting to face in midfield:
“The three midfielders who are playing are at a high level, it will not be easy to play, but if I put my mind to it and fight it, I can get it.”
He would also reveal that Chelsea promised him that he would play in his position (central midfield), adding that this was very important for him:
“I’ll give it a try and see what happens. Give it my all and help Chelsea so that he [Tuchel] can see the Saúl I want to show. Not just a versatile player. They promised me that I would play in my position. It was very important.”
