Bastian Schweinsteiger made things very awkward for his co-host on German television with his flirty comments after Argentina's World Cup triumph.

ARD presenter Esther Sedlaczek was wrapping up their coverage of Sunday's final from the Lusail Stadium when she unwisely allowed the former Germany midfielder the last word.

Sedlaczek said: 'Basti, we've come to the end of it. That's it for us. It was a lot of fun with you. Thank for that.'

Unable to resist one final joke, the former Germany, Manchester United and Bayern Munich player replies: 'Thank you Esther, it was a lot of fun. Now we're going on vacation together for two weeks, right?'

Sedlaczek is visibly surprised by his comment, which certainly risked annoying Schweinsteiger's former tennis player wife Ana Ivanovic.

'Yes, of course,' she responds before quickly correcting herself. 'No, no, no. Of course we don't!'

Pointedly, she then added: 'Have fun with your family. And you have the last words in the studio.'

The camera then cuts from the stadium in Qatar to the studio with the pair smiling awkwardly.

Schweinsteiger has been praised for his incisive commentary on ARD during the World Cup, which continued on Sunday when Argentina captain Lionel Messi had a traditional robe in gold placed on him ahead of the trophy presentation.

'I think Messi himself wasn't happy about that either. In my opinion, the action was unsuccessful,' he said.

Their slickness on screen has been praised with the pair sharing plenty of social media snaps together throughout the tournament.

On Sunday, Schweinsteiger tweeted a pic of the studio team together and wrote: 'The 2022 World Cup ended with what I consider to be the best final of all time and more than a worthy winner.

'Thanks to the entire @sportschau team for the great co-operation on site over the last four weeks!'

Sedlaczek has shared plenty of pictures of them together on Instagram throughout the tournament.

They witnessed a World Cup final classic on Sunday as France twice fought back against Argentina before losing on penalties as Lionel Messi finally won the one piece of silverware missing from his collection.
