After a first half that was dominated by the visitors, Shakhtar Donetsk took the lead right after the interval, courtesy of Oleksandr Zubkov's 46th minute finish.
And Lassina Traore had a golden opportunity to double the ascendancy in the 64th minute, after Andriy Lunin looked to have made a howler after stopping the forward from rounding him, but the striker could only find the woodwork.
Though it was an almost full strength Real side including the likes of Karim Benzema, Toni Kroos and Eden Hazard, the holders were unable to break through a resolute defensive effort from the Ukrainian giants.
But in the fifth minute of stoppage time the German defender finally got the goal Los Blancos needed, latching onto the end of a Toni Kroos cross to deny the Ukrainian side a valiant point.
