Shakira said she's "proud to be Latin American" following her ex Gerard Piqué's seemingly "xenophobic" comments this week.
The bad blood between Shakira and her ex Gerard Piqué continues. This week, the Spanish-born athlete appeared to have criticized Shakira and her supportive Latin American fans. "I am very disappointed with what society is," Piqué said. "So my ex is Latin American... you don't know what I've gotten on social media from her fans. These people have no lives."
Now fans believe the singer has taken a jab at her ex on social media. On April 2, 2023, Shakira took to Twitter to write: "Orgullosa de ser Latinoamericana," which translates to "proud to be Latin American." She doesn't directly say her comment is toward Piqué, but the timing of her post leads many to think that it was about his "offensive" statements.
In 2022, the "Hips Don't Lie" singer and Piqué announced their split after spending 11 years together and welcoming two kids together. Shakira released a diss track in January 2023 titled "Out of Your League," a hit song that greatly hints at Piqué's infidelity. Her music video garnered 166 million views in nine days, breaking the YouTube record for the most-viewed Latin song in 24 hours.
The Colombian beauty revealed last year that her heartbreaking split with Piqué was one of the "darkest hours of my life," adding that the situation was difficult to handle with two sons. "I try to do it and to protect them, because that's my number one mission in life," she said. "But then they hear things in school from their friends or they come across some disagreeable, unpleasant news online, and it just affects them, you know?"
Meanwhile, Piqué has managed to make himself look even worse. In an interview with the Spanish newspaper El Pais, the former footballer defended his actions. "The day I die, I will look behind me, and I hope to have done everything I wanted," he said. “I want to be true to myself. I’m not going to spend money on cleaning up my image. The people I worry about and love are the ones that know me. I don’t care about the rest. I channel my energy into being with my people and giving them what I have. I am very happy. There have been changes in my life, and I have known how to maintain my happiness.”
