Strachan reveals Sir Ferguson was still his mischievous self at wife's funeral

Gordon Strachan revealed that Sir Alex Ferguson showed his mischievous side at his wife's funeral - by whacking him around the head and telling him to get a haircut.

Sir Alex Ferguson's wife Lady Cathy passed away in October at the age of 84, and the funeral later that month was attended by many footballing greats.

And while Ferguson and Strachan had a rocky professional relationship, the former Man United midfielder spoke of a heartwarming reunion with his former boss at Lady Cathy's funeral.

Strachan told Boyle Sports (via Daily Star): 'He whacked me around the back of the head and told me to get a haircut!

'I'm 66 years of age, but it seriously got me thinking about going to a barber.'

Strachan's history with the legendary manager stretched from Aberdeen and Scotland to Man United - but they didn't always see eye-to-eye.

Their falling out began when Strachan left Aberdeen for Man United - despite having a pre-contract with Cologne - and continued when Ferguson took over the reins at Old Trafford a few years later.

Their public feud also played out when they met as managerial equals in the dugout.

They eventually settled their differences and put the past behind them, with Strachan among the many footballing legends who attended the service in Glasgow.

Lady Cathy had been married to Sir Alex since 1966, with the couple having met while they were both working at a typewriter factory in Glasgow.

David Beckham, Gary Neville, Bryan Robson, Steve Bruce, Kenny Dalglish and Brendan Rodgers were also at the event to commemorate the life of the woman who supported the great football manager.

Strachan added he felt Man United's current problems lie with the players, and not the manager Erik ten Hag, reflecting how he and his team-mates would behave under the charge of Sir Alex.

Strachan said:  'On Monday mornings, regardless of whether or not we won or lost, some of us would not be speaking to Sir Alex - completely blanking him.

'But the concept of 'losing the dressing room' is incorrect for me, because players are always going to have problems at some point. I got in a huff with Sir Alex because I wanted a transfer. He said no, so I just got on with it.

'You never hear it said in football, but there are actually so many times when the dressing room can lose the manager. Of the managers Manchester United have had in the last five years, there are some good ones in there!'

In 2020, Strachan opened up about his feud with Ferguson in an interview with Mail Sport.

In 2021, Strachan revealed that Ferguson went 'bananas' at his Aberdeen players after their display in the 1983 Scottish Cup final win over Rangers that he refused to let the players' wives go back on the team bus with them.
