The major financial difference between UCL and UEL football for Tottenham

Tottenham are currently in a Europa League spot but they will be hoping to jump into the top four and ensure they are back playing in the Champions League in 2023/24

All connected with Tottenham will be hoping that they have Champions League football to look forward to once again come September. In the top four for the vast majority of the 2022/23 season, Spurs currently find themselves in fifth heading into their final eight games.

Not only would a Champions League return see them come up against Europe's top clubs, playing in Europe's premier competition also makes a huge difference financially for Daniel Levy and Co. Having missed out on the Champions League in 2020/21 and 2021/22, Spurs' return to the competition this season was most welcome and one they must ensure continues over the coming years.

As per UEFA, clubs that qualified for the Champions League group stage this season each received a base payment of €15.6m (£13.7m). The money would then increase depending on how a side fared in the group stage, with a win worth €2.8m (£2.5m) and a draw bringing in €930,000 (£819,000).

It is very much the same in terms of the incentives on offer from the Europa League but the money does drop considerably when it comes to Europe's second club competition. Clubs bank €3.6million (£3.2m) just for reaching the group stage in the first place, which is £10.5m less than what a club would receive from making the group phase of the Champions League.

The prize money for wins and draws in the group stage is also significantly less in the Europa League, with a victory earning a club €630,000 (£555,000) and a draw €210,000 (£185,000). Group winners can expect to receive a qualification bonus of €1.1m (£969,000) and runners-up €500,000 (£440,000).

Whereas Tottenham received €9.6m (£8.4m) for making the Champions League Round of 16, reaching the same round of the Europa League works out at €1.2m (£1m). There is a huge difference between the Champions League and Europa League and Spurs must ensure they qualify for the former, both in terms of helping the club move forward again and also financially.
