Thierry Henry has been slammed by some Arsenal fans on social media after quipping that both he and his former club were "always second best."
The iconic Frenchman, 47, is a Gunners legend from his playing days, where he starred under Arsene Wenger. Henry won two Premier League titles and two FA Cups before moving to Barcelona in 2007.
These days, Henry is a big part of CBS' Champions League coverage alongside Kate Scott, Jamie Carragher and Micah Richards. But comments he made during coverage of Tuesday night's games have seemingly landed him in hot water with Arsenal fans.
In a social media vote on X, fans voted Henry the second most popular person on the show behind Scott. On Instagram, Richards won the vote with Henry once again runner-up. Reacting, Henry joked: "I'm just like Arsenal, always second best every time!"
While the segment - and Henry's reaction - were good natured and went down a storm in the studio, his comment has rubbed some Arsenal fans the wrong way. One fan responded bluntly, asking: "Why s*** on your own club?"
Others also appeared to take issue with the Gunners legend. One social media user wrote: "When your mate shoots you down to impress the cool kids," while another said: "Friendly fire."
While Henry played an influential role in Arsenal's success during his heyday, the Gunners have fallen on leaner times since he left. The club have not won the Premier League title for over 20 years, although Mikel Arteta's men have run Manchester City close in successive seasons.
Speaking at the end of last season, where City pipped Arsenal to the title on the final day, Henry expressed fears that his old club could suffer from burnout after coming up short in back-to-back seasons.
He told Premier League Productions: "They found a way. What they did is just stupid. It’s not like they wait two years and do it a bit after… They do it all the time.
"One thing that worries me, is that every time a team tries to stay with them and keep the pace, they burn their wings. Every time they implode. Look at Liverpool. They couldn’t deal with it. I hope Arsenal can stay in the rhythm because it is not easy."
