The Champions League and Europa League could be divided into geographical zones from 2024.

Corriere della Sera reports UEFA presented the European Leagues its plans for reform two weeks ago, which would see its cup competitions mimic the model of American sports.

It is claimed the Champions League will be split into four groups of eight teams, with playoffs, playouts, the top six of each pool being assured of their place for the following season and only four sides able to qualify through national Leagues.

That would be followed by a 32-team Europa League 1 and a second Europa League with 64 sides.

Il Corriere writes the latter could be divided into geographical areas of North, South, East and West.

The teams who qualify from their regions will then compete in a knockout format to determine who is promoted.

The 2023-24 campaign will be key for Serie A sides as that is the last one which guarantees qualification based on domestic League placing.

That would almost certainly lead to games being played at weekends, which the European Leagues has long opposed.
