Liverpool secured their place in the quarter-finals of the Champions League with an impressive 3-1 victory away to Bayern Munich on Wednesday night.
With the tie goalless from the first leg, Liverpool took control in the Allianz Arena, with Sadio Mane scoring a brace and Virgil van Dijk also on target which ensured that Jurgen Klopp's side went through despite Joel Matip's own goal.
Sportsmail's Martin Keown and Chris Sutton give their verdicts on the action.
MARTIN KEOWN
Virgil the creator is perfection personified
Virgil van Dijk towered above the Bayern Munich defenders to score Liverpool’s second goal. He has been head and shoulders above the rest all season.
On Wednesday night, he was perfection personified. What sets him apart is that he never thinks, ‘I’m just here to defend.’
Even on an intense, highstakes night such as this, the Liverpool defender is always looking for ways he can win the game for his team. He is always searching for that killer pass.
That is what he did in the 26th minute when he clipped a superb, 55-yard ball out of defence to Sadio Mane. Van Dijk reads the game superbly and knows what Mane is capable of if he can get him in behind. The forward still had plenty to do and showed sublime skill to score but without Van Dijk’s positivity, that chance would not have been made.
Liverpool may not have missed Van Dijk defensively in the first leg at Anfield — keeping a clean sheet — but Wednesday night's game showed how important his creativity is to this side.
This must be Jurgen Klopp’s most satisfying Liverpool victory. From front to back, his players oozed composure.
Alisson imparted so much confidence to his defenders in the way he prowled the penalty area. The forwards set the tone by pressing from the off — and Liverpool did not panic when they did get on the ball.
In the first leg, Liverpool put themselves under pressure by going backwards — passing to Alisson 16 times in the first half — and they were at home! They learned from their mistakes in Germany, only going back to their goalkeeper six times before half-time.
CHRIS SUTTON
Sadio Mane is more than just pace... he made a fool of Manuel Neuer
His first goal was truly special. The first touch is everything. You can see Mane pointing to where he wants the pass and Virgil van Dijk hit a lovely ball. Mane knows what he wants to do but it is another thing to be able to execute it. He makes a fool out of Manuel Neuer. Mane still had a lot to do though. There were defenders to beat.
A lot of players would have just lashed it but he had the awareness to take his time and dink it into the net. It was such a difficult finish. Everyone knows about how quick Mane is but this goal showed is so much more than just raw pace. He scores all type of goals and proves Liverpool do not just have to rely on Mo Salah.
People keep judging Mo Salah by his heroics from last season. That is totally unfair. As is often the case, he fed off scraps against Bayern but still looked a threat and produced a delightful pass to set up Mane’s second goal.
Those two have still carried Liverpool at times this season. I also think it would be unfair to be too harsh on Robert Lewandowski and Bayern’s attackers. This is a team that had scored six goals against Wolfsburg in their previous game and stuck five past Monchengladbach. Liverpool just dealt with them so well.
