Virgil van Dijk meets the Easter Bunny...how the world of football celebrated Easter Sunday

Virgil van Dijk has led the Easter celebrations from footballers past and present including Thomas Muller, David Beckham and Kaka.

The talismanic Liverpool centre half is currently out with a knee injury and is not expected to feature again for Jurgen Klopp's side this season after a rash tackle on him by Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford in October's Merseyside derby.

But the Dutchman posed for a picture while out walking with someone in a life-sized Easter bunny costume, with the caption: 'Happy Easter from me and the big guy!' followed by a rabbit emoji.

Former Reds defender Martin Skrtel, 36, who last played for Turkish side Istanbul Basaksehir, took a selfie from Dubai, United Arab Emirates and wished his followers a happy Easter Sunday.

Everton midfielder Alex Iwobi, who came off the bench in that hot-tempered October derby, posed holding a chocolate Easter egg.

Bayern Munich star Thomas Muller posted a video of him frolicking outside with a horse, while his former team-mate at the German giants Philipp Lahm showed a picture of his family painting Easter eggs.

Lahm's caption read: 'The Lahm household! Dad is watching closely to see whether the Easter eggs are being coloured for long enough - technique is everything. We wish you and your loved ones a happy and relaxing Easter!'

Several high-profile retired footballers also joined them in expressing similar festive sentiments on Instagram.

England legend David Beckham posed with his whole family, with wife Victoria, sons Brooklyn, Romeo and Cruz, and daughter Harper Seven.

Victoria and Harper Seven are wearing Easter bunny ears, with Beckham enjoying a beer with an open packet of Mini Eggs on the table.

His caption read: 'Happy Easter everyone. Family together @victoriabeckham @brooklynbeckham @romeobeckham @cruzbeckham #HarperSeven'.

Fellow former Real Madrid midfielder Kaka, who played 92 times for Brazil, also posted an Easter message relating to his faith.
