Sergio Aguero's opening goal for Manchester City against Sheffield United was allowed to stand as the ball didn't directly strike referee Chris Kavanagh in the build up.
The Argentine was picked out by Kevin De Bruyne and lashed the ball past Dean Henderson to break the deadlock and the goal was given despite furious protests from the Sheffield United players and staff.
They believed midfielder John Fleck was impeded by Kavanagh as the Blades worked the ball out of their own hour. Indeed, Kavanagh was caught in the midst of play but made no contact with the ball.
Under the new rules made by The International Football Association Board being followed by the Premier League for the 2019/20 season: if the ball touches the referee or another match official and goes into the goal, or results in a change of possession or a promising attack, a dropped ball will be awarded.
Therefore, as Kavanagh made no contact with the ball, no drop ball was awarded and VAR didn't overturn the decision to allow the goal.
Earlier in the fixture, Sheffield United striker Lys Mousset had a goal chalked off for offside which prompted chants of "F*** VAR" from both sets of supporters at the Etihad Stadium.
