Two years, 13 days, seven squad inclusions and zero appearances. Facundo Pellistri has had a few uncompetitive kicks in a Manchester United shirt, scoring at Derby and against Liverpool in Bangkok, but he remains unused at a competitive level.
Thursday marks two years to the day since Pellistri first warmed the United bench against Paris Saint-Germain at the Parc des Princes and he is still waiting to get off it.
Pellistri did start at Barrow at the start of the month for the Under-21s in the EFL Trophy, his third appearance in the competition. An evening at Holker Street is not ideal preparation for a World Cup.
In spite of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Erik ten Hag not utilising Pellistri, the right winger is a full Uruguay international and was included in their most recent squad. Two separate loan spells with Alaves offered exposure, albeit not enough; Pellistri started six times last season.
Yet he has attained seven caps since his debut in January. Pellistri does not turn 21 until December and it is a quirk that, like his compatriot Guillermo Varela, his wait for a United debut has crossed the two-year mark.
United signed Pellistri for €10million from Penarol on deadline day in 2020 and that day - and window - has aged worse than Julian Glover in The Last Crusade.
Edinson Cavani played when he fancied it, Alex Telles peaked on his debut, Amad is on loan at Sunderland and Donny van de Beek was loaned after 18 months. Four loanees and one departure.
Amad and Pellistri, the former left-footed and the latter a rightie, were right-sided forwards to offset the failure to prise Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund. Of the aforementioned quintet, Pellistri was the only one in the squad against Newcastle, his third consecutive inclusion in a Premier League matchday 20.
Pellistri's peculiar time at United was encapsulated after his maiden first-team appearance in a friendly at Pride Park in July last year. He had scored the winner and, while conducting a pitchside interview with MUTV outlining his intention to stay at the club, Solskjaer was informing the press another loan was in the offing for Pellistri.
United had intended for him to be elsewhere now. An ankle injury sustained on a rare outing against Rayo Vallecano on July 30 scuppered any loan move and so Ten Hag has a forward he did not expect to train on a daily basis at Carrington.
Ten Hag did not view Anthony Martial as an inconvenience when it became obvious there would be no takers for a scorer of eight United goals in the last two seasons. United's attack revolved around Martial in pre-season and his three separate absences have been keenly felt since August.
Pellistri is impossible to judge while untried. His and Amad's arrivals were supposed to usher in a new recruitment drive at United of targeting younger overseas players. That hit the skids when United balked at the £5m fee demanded for Moises Caicedo, a midfielder who twice dominated them in Brighton victories three months apart. Benjamin Sesko opted to stay under the Red Bull umbrella in the summer.
It was hackneyed of Ten Hag to only introduce Marcus Rashford off the bench against Newcastle when he had four more substitutions available. United's bench was underwhelming and there were two midfield youngsters in Zidane Iqbal and Kobbie Mainoo, but Pellistri and Anthony Elanga are internationals and Alejandro Garnacho was with the Argentina squad in March.
Garnacho and Pellistri were wildcard options with an unpredictability worth pitting against Newcastle. It would have been advisable to have replaced Antony with Pellistri as the Brazilian engineered room on the outside of Dan Burn, only Antony is as left-footed as Antonio Valencia is right-footed. So he checked back and the crossing opportunities were gone.
Sir Alex Ferguson, sat in his row of seats in the directors' box, fearlessly turned to Federico Macheda when the stakes were as high as a Premier League title run-in. Mason Greenwood was thrown on at the Parc des Princes with United a goal away from the Champions League quarter-finals, Axel Tuanzebe dueled with Alexis Sanchez on his first Premier League start, Marcus Rashford was promoted from substitute to starter during the warm-up against Midtjylland and David Moyes depended on Adnan Januzaj before the clocks went back.
The tight turnaround between games is against Martial, while Elanga and Garnacho have not played in a month. It would have been prudent to have exposed Pellistri to an obdurate Newcastle defence ahead of the visit of Tottenham, victorious in their last three and seven points ahead of United.
If Pellistri gets on, he will have waited two years and two weeks.
