Arsenal's Granit Xhaka is facing more embarrassment after he promised 'discipline and respect for other people' in his programme notes before being set off for grabbing Burnley midfielder Ashley Westwood by the throat on Sunday night.
The Gunners suffered a fourth successive home defeat in the Premier League with Sean Dyche's struggling Burnley side claiming a 1-0 win at the Emirates.
But the major talking point of the game came just before the hour mark when a skirmish broke out between both sets of players after a foul on Burnley winger Dwight McNeil.
VAR replays showed Xhaka had grabbed Westwood by the throat in the melee that followed and, while a yellow card was initially given by referee Graham Scott, it was upgraded to red after he reviewed the footage on the pitch-side monitor.
But the behaviour the Arsenal star displayed on Sunday night was a far cry from the values he insisted he had in his programme notes.
He wrote: 'I'm a guy who is very organised.
'This is maybe my best thing - for me, organisation, discipline and respect for other people are very, very important.
'I grew up like this and I will pass it on to my little one.'
The Gunners find themselves 15th in the Premier League table after their latest loss with manager Mikel Arteta under huge pressure to turn things around.
Arteta described Xhaka’s behaviour as ‘unacceptable’ and said the experienced Swiss midfielder overstepped the line in the aftermath of the game.
He said: ‘Absolutely (unacceptable). He’s made a mistake, the dominance we had at that point… it’s a game we clearly had to win but down to 10 men you give the opponent a chance.
‘Yes it is unacceptable to do that action but it is because they are so willing to do more, fight more, and on this occasion Granit overstepped the line. We cannot make that mistake because it’s the wrong approach for us.’
Sky Sports pundit Graeme Souness described Xhaka's actions as 'the stuff you see in the playground', adding: ‘His reaction is totally wrong. It’s a foul and a yellow card because he’s clumsy. Accept it and move on.
‘His reaction is just totally wrong. Why do you want to square up? To get involved in that nonsense.'
Fellow pundit Patrice Evra revealed on Sunday night that Arsenal legend Thierry Henry once 'turned off the television' after seeing Xhaka lead the Gunners out onto the pitch as captain.
Westwood was again involved in the decisive play of the game as his corner in the 73rd minute was flicked into his own net by a helpless Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
