Dele Alli was back in training with Everton after a dejecting season at Besiktas.

Pictured riding an exercise bike following his return to Premier League surroundings, he may have had manager Sean Dyche's recent words ringing in his ears: 'get fit'.

The Toffees began preparations for the new season in earnest yesterday as members of the squad reunited at their Merseyside mothership, Finch Farm.

Plenty of big hitters were in action during the session, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Dwight McNeil, and James Tarkowski all pictured being put through their paces.

Everton avoided relegation on a dramatic final day of the top-flight season and fans are baying for a more competitive year than the last two, which have seen them slump to 16th and then 17th.

Alli has faced a tortured few years on the pitch, starting when he fell out of favour under Jose Mourinho at Spurs. The 27-year-old has just one Premier League goal since March 2020 and only found the net three times in Turkey.

But his new boss seems open to giving the prodigal son a route back if he shows the determination.

Speaking about Everton's castaway in April, Dyche, who had talked with Alli, said: 'I just got a sense that he wants to be back playing football and playing well.

'I've heard all the noise, I've heard all the opinions and I'm pretty sure that you're aware that I like to make my own. But he needs to get fit.

'I've met him but I haven't seen him train, I haven't seen him play for Everton, I haven't seen him train with us every day.'
