KNVB Beker champions Go Ahead Eagles are set to lose manager Paul Simonis after the latter reportedly agreed on a deal with Bundesliga side VfL Wolfsburg.
After being hired to replace Rene Hake, the 40-year-old Simonis made history last season by winning the KNVB Beker with Go Ahead Eagles—the club's first major trophy—in his first season in charge.
According to the German newspaper Wolfsburger Allgemeine Zeitung, Simonis has agreed on a deal with VfL Wolfsburg, who were looking for a new manager after the firing of Ralph Hasenhuttl.
Wolfsburg will reportedly pay less than one million euros for the young and upcoming Simonis, who previously worked as an assistant at Go Ahead Eagles and sc Heerenveen and recently extended his contract at Go Ahead Eagles until the summer of 2027.
Simonis beat FC Copenhagen boss Jacob Neestrup, who wasn't allowed to leave by his club, in the race for the job after "fully convincing" club director Peter Christiansen and leaving a "great impression" after meeting with the club.
After his impressive season with the Eagles, Simonis was reportedly a favourite to take the Ajax job following Francesco Farioli's departure. The Dutchman counted himself as the top candidate, but the Amsterdam club eventually hired former Liverpool assistant John Heitinga, leaving Simonis reportedly "very disappointed."
An announcement is expected to be made soon.
